Truth Quotient

The Truth Quotient (TM) is a twenty-eight item self-referencing instrument which assesses the four levels of organizational alignment: PThe instrument can be used for personal self-assessment or among work groups, departments and whole organizations. The instrument can be self-scored or batch processed using proprietary Truth Quotient software. The information that emerges demonstrates participant's alignment among themselves, teams and the organization.

The self-norming aspect of the instrument means that each of the twenty-eight items is responded to twice by each participant. First, the participant indicates (1-5) how things are NOW, then they respond again (1-5) how they would like things to be in the FUTURE. Any gap indicates an opportunity for change. A low score for the future indicates a general lack of regard for that idea. Therefore, even though each of the items is 'biased' toward the values associated with the Truthful Organization, as conceptualized by, respondents can overcome this bias with one of their own.

Download the following seven item "sampler" to get a glimpse of the instrument.

Instruction:

Read each question fully, then respond by circling the NOW score. Do not complete the FUTURE score, but go on to the next question. After completing all NOW scores, go back and repeat the process for all FUTURE scores.

1. I do not allow others to undermine my self-confidence.
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

2. My "feelings" are at least as important as my thoughts.
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

3. When things are going badly, my team expects me to say so - to help us get back on track.
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

4. Everyone on the team is expected to take a truthful stand, even if it goes against prevailing "wisdom."
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

5. My team celebrates what has been learned when mistakes are mad
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

6. My choice to work in this organization is part of my greater "personal vision."
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

7. I understand that building relationship sometimes requires speaking my personal truth even though it may be uncomfortable for others to hear.
DISAGREE AGREE ..... DISAGREE AGREE
NOW: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ..... FUTURE: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

8. Are you committed to making changes necessary to close the gap?

Calculating the T/Q:

The total of all NOW scores divided by the total of all FUTURE scores is your Truth Quotient. There are seven NOW scores and seven FUTURE scores. Record the sum of all seven NOW scores, then record the sum of all seven FUTURE scores. For example, if the total NOW score is 14 and the total FUTURE score is 24, the T/Q calculated by dividing 14 by 24, the result is: .583 rounded to a T/Q of 58.

Calculating the Adjusted T/Q:

The adjusted T/Q takes into account your commitment to closing the gap between what is NOW and what you would like in the FUTURE. Calculate the T/Q, as described above. Then look at the last question, #8. Which number did you circle? What ever number it is, divide by ten, ( if you selected 7; 7 divided by 10 equals .7 ) or merely move the decimal point one place to the left. 4 is .4, 6 is .6, note: 10 is 1.0 etc. Now multiply that decimal number by your T/Q. If your T/Q is 58 and your commitment to change is 8, multiply .8 X 58. Your adjusted T/Q is: 46.4.

Norms:

Preliminary data for this short form yields similars results to the full-length Truth Quotient instrument. The average T/Q is between 65 - 84. The average Adjusted T/Q is between 48 - 64.

Item Analysis:

The full length instrument provides critical insight into key areas which individuals or teams may choose to focus their attention on. Even the short form can give you some insight. Note that the first seven items reflect issues associated with the seven steps to championing truth in the organization. For example, the first step is to "declare and live out a personal mission." Note that the first question: "I do not allow others to undermine my self-confidence" may indicate whether a person is living out their personal mission, or allowing themselves to be swayed by others. Even a large gap can be bridged by working on a personal mission. For a full item analysis, compare each of the seven questions to the seven steps.
